FY2005 Q-III3 Data on "Competitive Situation in the Telecommunications Field" Compiled

Since 2003, MIC has been requesting telecommunications carriers to report on their telecommunications business, as the part of the competition review in the telecommunications field. This time, MIC has compiled the latest data on the competitive situation concerning the telecommunications market in the third quarter (Q-III3) of FY2005.
The outline of the data is as follows:

1.     Fixed communications
     i1) With respect to the number of fixed telephone (PSTN) subscribers, NTT East (47.1%) and NTT West (47.6%) occupy 94.7% of the total.
     ii2) As regards the number of 050 numbers in use allocated to IP telephony services, SOFTBANK BB occupies 49.0%. The top three carriers (SOFTBANK BB, NTT Communications and KDDi1) occupy 84.2% of the total. As for the number of 0AB~J numbers in use allocated to IP telephony services, NTT East occupies 29.3%. The top three carriers (NTT East, K-Opticom Corp. and NTT West) occupy 69.3% of the total .

2.     Mobile communications
With respect to the number of cellular telephone and PHS subscribers, the share of NTT DoCoMo Group is 54.1%, au Group, 26.1% and Vodafone, 16.0%. The share of au Group has been increasing continuously.

3.     Internet access
     i1) With respect to the number of DSL services subscribers, NTT East (20.7%) and NTT West (18.4%) occupy 39.1%, and SOFTBANK BB occupies 34.6%. These top three carriers occupy 73.7% of the total.
     ii2) As regards the number of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) subscribers for detached house and corporate users, NTT East (37.7%) and NTT West (35.5%) occupy 73.2%, and the power utility group occupies 22.8%. As for those for apartment house and condominium users, NTT East (28.0%) and NTT West (15.9%) occupy 43.9%, and USEN occupies 19.7%. The share of NTT regional carriers (NTT East and NTT West) has been increasing continuously.
