Commencement of Discussion on Technical Requirements concerning Measures for the Utilization and Advancement of COAM (Customer Owned and Maintained) Mobile Communications Using Low Power

The Telecommunications Technology Sub-Council (Chair: Prof. DOI Norihisa, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Chuo University) under the Telecommunications Council decided today to commence discussion of technical requirements concerning the measures for the utilization and advancement of COAM (Customer Owned and Maintained) mobile communications using low power. The background of this commencement is explained below.

[Background]
New public mobile communications services, as typified by cellular phones, have recently been placed on the market one after another against the background of technological innovation or market scale. On the other hand, COAM mobile communications, though the market scale is small, have also been used in various fields from high-power, large systems such as MCA radio to low-power, small ones such as convenience radio or specified low-power radio stations.
The Sub-Council decided to consider the introduction of the most suitable digital system for convenience radio stations, expansion of the radio control working range, and the use of long-distance telemeters that are useful for preventing agricultural damage, to promote the utilization and advancement of low-power, small systems used mainly by small and medium-size enterprises or individuals, among COAM mobile communications systems, and to discuss technical conditions required for the systems.
