Public Comment Invited on Draft Report from Study Group on Internet's Smooth Transition to IPv6

The Study Group on Internet's Smooth Transition to IPv6 (Chair: Prof. SAITO Tadao, University of Tokyo) has studied the future domestic Internet networks from technical perspectives since August 2007. As it has recently compiled a draft report based on the study results, it invites public comment thereon from today until Monday, May 12, 2008.

1. Outline
In Japan, with over 25 million subscribers to broadband constant Internet connections, the Internet is now indispensable for smooth socio-economic activities and national life.

Although some point out that IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) addresses will run out by 2010 due to the rapid increase of Internet users worldwide, IPv6, which was developed as a successor to IPv4, has penetrated very slowly.

Under these circumstances, the Study Group has studied, from technical perspectives, measures to facilitate the transition of domestic Internet networks to IPv6, and drafted its report thereon.

2. Future schedule
The Study Group will consider the contributed comments and finalize the report by the end of May 2008.
