Study Group on Possible Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields

To build a society where people can use radio waves without anxiety and in safety, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will start its Study Group on Possible Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields. The objective of the study group will be to promote research on possible effects of radio waves on human bodies, and evaluate and verify guidelines for protecting human bodies from possible effects of radio waves.

1. Object and background
As the use of radio waves has become rapidly widespread with the spread of mobile phones, the commercialization of new radio systems and the like in recent years, people have an increasing number of opportunities to use radio waves in their everyday life and there are growing concerns about possible effects of radio waves on health.

Under these circumstances, MIC will start the study group with the aim of promoting research and building a society where people can use radio waves without anxiety and in safety. To accomplish the research, the outcomes of domestic and foreign studies on possible effects of radio waves on human bodies will be evaluated and analyzed, and themes that should be studied in Japan extracted, and guidelines for protecting human bodies from possible effects of radio waves will be evaluated and verified.

2. Research topics
(1) Evaluating and analyzing outcomes of domestic and foreign studies on possible effects of radio waves on human bodies
(2) Extracting themes concerning possible effects of radio waves on human bodies, which should be studied in Japan
(3) Evaluating and verifying guidelines for protecting human bodies from possible effects of radio waves
(4) Other related items
