The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) held the Study Group Concerning the Improved Use of IPv6 on the Internet (Chairman: Tadao SAITO, Honorary Professor of Tokyo University) to study specific measures to promote the spread of compatibility for IPv6.

The Basic Policy Regarding the Compatibility of Internet Services for IPv6 and the Acquirement of IPv6 Related Skills Needed for Network Technicians was formulated to promote the use of IPv6 services by individual and corporate users and the acquirement of skills related to IPv6 for network technicians.

Background

The MIC predicts even by early 2011 that IPv4 addresses, principal basic technology that are a foundation of Japan's social and economic activities for the internet, will run out. Taking this situation into consideration, the Study Group Concerning the Improved Use of IPv6 on the Internet was held from February 2009 which conducted investigations into concrete measures that should be taken to raise the adaptability of IPv6 and promote the spread of the technology.
