Public Comment Invited Concerning the Basic Policy
Proposal Regarding the Develop of a System to Realize
Multimedia Broadcasts for Portable Devices

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has created the Basic Policy Proposal Regarding the Develop of a System to Realize Multimedia Broadcasts for Portable Devices as a basic policy concerning the development of a system to realize the creation of new broadcasting by taking advantage of frequencies that will be used for the complete transition to digital television by July, 2011.
Therefore, MIC will be accepting public comments from July 11 until August 10, 2009.

Background to realize multimedia broadcasts on portable devices

A certain amount of frequencies throughout the VHF band and UHF band (90-108MHz, 170-222MHz and 710-770MHz) will be freed up and can be used for other purposes due to the total transition to digital broadcasting which is forecast to occur on July 24, 2011.
The Information and Communications Council was consulted regarding the technical conditions to effectively use these radio waves in March 2006, and MIC received a response from the council stating that it would be appropriate to use the frequencies 90-108MHz and 207.5-222MHz for multimedia broadcasting in June 2007.
