Technical Conditions of Multimedia Broadcast
Formats for Portable Devices

Partial Verdict from the Information and Communications Council

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has today received a partial verdict from the Information and Communications Council (Chairman: Takuma Otoshi, Chairman of IBM Japan) regarding the Technical Conditions of Multimedia Broadcast Formats for Portable Devices which is a part of the Technical Conditions for Broadcast Systems Inquiry No.2023 of September 28, 2006.

Background

Regarding the use of vacant frequencies due to the total transition to digital television, the MIC received a partial verdict from the Information and Communications Council in June 2007, stating that it was appropriate to use part of VHF band frequencies for new broadcasts other than multimedia television broadcasts for portable devices after July 2011.

Upon receiving this verdict, the Information and Communications Council, Information and Communications Technology Sub-Council and Broadcast System Committee (General Manager: Shin Ito, Professor of Tokyo University of Science) moved forward with deliberations from July 2008 concerning Technical Conditions of Multimedia Broadcast Formats for Portable Devices for the smooth start of new multimedia broadcast services after July 2011, and also put together a committee report in September 2009 after accepting public comments.
