Dunhuang
Among the historical Buddhist remains in China is the famous Dunhuang. Its Cave 17 was discovered at the beginning of the century and it still remains a mystery today why it was necessary to seal off the cave and its historical artifacts for centuries. The 30,000 pieces of artifacts recovered there have since found their way to several major countries, with only a few thousand remaining at Dunhuang. This data base was compiled as a result of an opportunity to exhibit 21 pieces of rare images from the Stain Collection in the British Museum.
