BRIEF OVERALL PROJECT SUMMARY:

Research and development on info-communications systems for the physically disabled and the elderly
PROJECT OBJECTIVES:
Japanese society is aging at a rate that is unprecedented in other
developed countries, and the need for creating a social environment that is
suited to this aging society is more pressing than ever.
To pave the way for the creation of an info-communications infrastructure
that responds to the needs of the aging society, and further to provide an
environment in which the aged and the physically handicapped can live in
peace and comfort, it is important that info-communications systems for
the elderly and the physically handicapped be developed and diffused as
quickly as possible.
With this background in mind, this project will carry out research and
development on the info-communications systems for the physically
disabled and the elderly
EXPECTED/ACTUAL RESULTS:
(1)Remote health consulting systems;
(2)Communication, emergency reporting and position locating systems for
    the elderly.
TARGET GROUPS:

PARTNERS/ACTORS IN THE PROJECT:
The research team includes researchers from suppliers of
telecommunication equipment
USE OF INFORMATION/TELEMATIC TECHNOLOGIES:
    I. Remote health consulting systems:
In order to realize a system that will allow doctors in hospitals to provide
diagnoses and health consultations to aged people living alone or to
patients receiving home treatment, the project will develop:(1)a medical
multimedia data recording-retrieval system;(2)a remote monitoring
system of urinary glucose; and (3)a high-definition still picture transfer
system.
II. Communication, emergency reporting and position locating systems for
  the elderly:
In order to establish systems that enable the elderly and the
hearing/sight-impaired to carry out high-level communications freely,
research and development will be carried out on (1)multi-function
telephone systems for elderly users, and (2)a portable information
processing system. In the future, research and development will be carried
out to enable the introduction of systems that can report on emergencies
or monitor the location of elderly persons out of doors.
BENEFITS TO THE INFORMATION SOCIETY:
In the global information society of the 21st century, those who are
unable to get access to or send information due to physical disabilities or
age will be faced with an extremely large handicap in participating fully
in the community.
The project will develop technologies to help such citizens to participate
in society.
EXPECTED COST:
370 million Japanese yen paid by Japanese Government in FY1993
TIME SCHEDULE TO COMPLETION:
The project will continue until fiscal year 1996.
