Status Report on Year 2000 Problem Investigation Undertaken by Administrative Organizations


1. Outline of investigation

(1) Objective

The objective of this investigation is to summarize the status results of the measures taken by each ministry/agency for their Government Information Systems (GIS), that they operate and manage and is deeply related to public life, to review whether the measures are appropriate in resolving the “Year 2000 Problem”.

(2) Target of investigation

A report was prepared on January 31, 1998 on systems that greatly affect the safety of the public, and affect civic and corporate activities of the computer systems in operation by the central administrative organizations (25 ministries/agencies).

2. Investigation results

(1) Status of measures

Of the 395 investigation target systems, 149 systems, amounting to approximately 38% of the entire systems have already been updated with proper measures as of January 31, 1998. The remaining 246 systems are scheduled to be taken care of by December 1999.

Note:
Measures already taken:

Programs concerned have been revised and hardware have been replaced (this includes machines that don't require program debugging since they incorporated the 4-digit year calendar to start with).

Measures scheduled to be taken:

Programs that are being revised, programs that are being reviewed for the need of revision, and future investigative target items that may clearly require revisions in the future.
