  1. Info-communications equipment ownership
    The ownership ratio of info-communications equipment was, cellular phone 67.3%, PHS 12.2%, car phone 4.5%, pager 29.5%, facsimile 93.2%, word processor 64.6%, personal computer 73.7%, and PDA (Personal Digital Assistants) 14.1%. Compared with the previous survey, ownership increased by the following percentage-points: cellular phone 8.3 percentage-points, PHS 1.2 percentage-points, personal computer 2.3 percentage-points, PDA 4.1 percentage-points. The average number of equipments owned by an establishment were as follows: cellular phone 4.2, PHS 2.7, car phone 3.0, pager 5.7, facsimile 1.9, word processor 2.9, personal computer 8.0, and PDA 5.7.

  2. Cellular phone, car phone, PHS, and pager ownership (by industry)
    Tabulated by industry, the highest rate of ownership for each type of equipment was as follows: cellular phones - Construction (95.4%), PHS - Gas, Electric, Heat Supply and Water (30.0%), car phone - Real estate (15.0%), and pager - Gas, Electric, Heat Supply and Water (60.3%).
    If we look at the ownership rate based on the number of employee, we can see that, except for PHS, the rate increases proportionally with the size of employee. Cellular phone ownership for establishment with more than 100 employees was approximately 80% (79.4%). While the highest ownership ratio for PHS was 19.1% in establishments with more than 100 employees, establishments with 5 to 29 employees (12.2%) showed a higher rate than establishments with 30 to 99 employees (10.5%).

  3. Facsimile, word processor, personal computer, and PDA ownership (by industry)
    Tabulated by industry, the highest ownership ratio by type of equipment was as follows: Facsimile - Finance (99.4%), word processor - Government (88.3%), personal computer - Gas, Electric, Heat Supply and Water (95.4%), PDA - Insurance (33.0%).
    If we look at the ownership rate based on the number of employee, we see that, except for PHS, the rate increases proportionally with the size of the employees.

  4. Use of PDA as a communications terminal
    Among the establishments that own PDA, the ratio of establishments that use them as a communications terminal sush as to send or receive data and to send e-mail increased from the previous survey by 5.4 percentage-points to 54.8%. Within that group, the percentage that use all terminals for communication was 21.9%, a 9.2 percentage-point increase, and the percentage that "A portion of the terminals are used" was 32.9%, a 3.8 percentage-point decrease from the prior survey.
    Tabulated by number of employees, we see that the ratio of employees using PDA as a communications terminal increases proportionally with the number of employees. Establishments with 100 or more employees had the highest ration at 73.1%.

  5. ISDN line usage
    The ratio of establishments using ISDN was 24.1%. The ratio of establishments that know about ISDN was 19.1%. More than 40% (43.2%) of establishments are aware of ISDN.
