The ratio of Enterprises installing LANs was 83.3% for Enterprises with 300 or more employees, which shows a steady annual increase from 1996. Tabulated by industry we see that in Finance (76.4%) and Manufacturing (72.3%) the rate of installation is high.
Tabulated by number of employees, we see that the larger the enterprise the higher the rate of installation. Enterprises with 2,000 or more employees surpassed the 90% level (95.7%). Additionally, the installation rate for newly surveyed enterprises with 100 to 299 employees was 55.2%.
The ratio of enterprises installing an Intranet was 36.3% for enterprises with 300 or more employees, a 14.9 percentage-point increase since the previous survey.
Tabulated by industry we see that in Manufacturing (25.9%) and Finance and Insurance (25.5%) the rate of installation is high. Tabulated by number of employees, we see that the larger the enterprise the higher the rate of installation. In enterprises with 2,000 or more employees the installation rate was 58.3%. Additionally, the installation rate for newly surveyed enterprises with 100 to 299 employees was 16.6%.
The ratio of enterprises that use PDA and the like to connect to the in-house LAN/Intranet from remote locations was 22.3% for those with LANs and 34.1% for those with an Intranet.
The ratio of "users per terminal connected to a LAN or Intranet" was highest for "5 or more users" at 27.3%, followed by "2 users" (22.8%), and "1 user" (18.2%).
Looking at the "1 user" category tabulated by industry we see that "Services and Other" was highest at 26.7%.
The highest reported problem with LAN and Intranets was "security measures are difficult to establish" at 46.1%, followed by "insufficient network maintenance personnel" (45.7%), "increasing cost of network maintenance training personnel" (31.0%).
Looking at the purpose for installing a LAN or Intranet among those enterprises that have installed a network or that plan to install a network, the highest response was "implementation of internal information and data exchange" at 71.9%, followed by "increase work speed" (24.0%), and "Implementation of e-mail" (20.8%). Among those enterprises that intend to install a LAN, the highest response was "internal information and data exchange" at 60.3%, followed by "implementation of groupware and workflow systems" (14.9%), and "implementation of e-mail" (10.0%)
The ratio of enterprises with more than 300 employees that use an Extranet was 7.6%. This represents a 4.8 percentage-point increase since the previous survey.
Tabulated by industry, the rate of installation is high in Manufacturing (5.5%) and Finance and Insurance (4.7%).

Looking at the purpose for installing an Extranet, among those enterprises that use an Extranet we find that the highest response was "implementation of electronic data interchange (EDI)" at 43.4%. This was followed by "remote access connectivity" (24.5%) and "share customers information between related enterprises" (23.8%). Among those enterprises that intend to use an Extranet, the highest response was "implementation of electronic data interchange (EDI)" at 43.8%, followed by "share customers information between related enterprises" (29.0%), and "implementation of groupware and workflow systems" (25.9%)
