The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) hereby announces a schedule of starting practical ultra-high definition (4K/8K) TV broadcasts by satellite basic broadcasting (BS broadcasting and 110 degrees CS broadcasting).

Overview

The Follow-up Meeting on 4K/8K Roadmap (Chaired by Susumu Ito, Professor at Faculty of Science and Technology, Tokyo University of Science), which has been held by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), released the second interim report of the Follow-up Meeting on 4K/8K Roadmap in July 2015. Recently, the Follow-up Meeting has created a roadmap (2015) for 4K/8K promotion. This roadmap aims to start practical ultra-high definition TV broadcasts by satellite basic broadcasting (hereinafter referred to as “4K/8K BS broadcasting, etc.”) in 2018.

MIC has been developing an environment so that 4K/8K BS broadcasting, etc. will start in 2018 in accordance with the roadmap and that people will be able to watch ultra-high definition (4K/8K) TV broadcasts at home if they wish.

Therefore, while MIC continue necessary procedures, such as institutional development toward the implementation of 4K/8K BS broadcasting etc., with consideration of the basic idea of the above, MIC has decided to announce the schedule of 4K/8K BS broadcasting, etc. currently planned.

MIC will continue publicity activities, including the clarification of receivers available to 4K/8K BS broadcasting, etc., for viewers in cooperation with organizations concerned toward the smooth introduction of 4K/8K BS broadcasting, etc.
