October 13, 2017 Verification of Effect of Telework Day by Using Mobile Big Data

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, in cooperation with related ministries and organizations, decided July 24 as Telework Day for a nationwide one-day campaign to be held every year in and after this year in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics, the opening ceremony of which is expected to be held on July 24, 2020. This year’s nationwide telework campaign was held with the participation of over 900 organizations and more than 60,000 people.
One of the policy objectives of Telework Day is the relaxation of traffic congestion that is assumed during the period of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games. To that end, it is necessary to verify the effect of this year’s Telework Day quantitatively and make use of the result for the campaign for next year onwards. For this verification, an analysis based on mobile big data, including the location information of cellular phone users, will be effective. Recently, under the cooperation of DoCoMo Insight Marketing, Inc., KDDI Corporation, and SOFTBANK Corp. the movement of people on Telework Day was analyzed, and we have decided to announce the results of the analysis.
