January 11, 2019 Results of the Visit of Yukari Sato, State Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications to Myanmar

Yukari Sato, State Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, visited Myanmar from January 8 through 10, 2019, in order to promote the cooperation of Japan and Myanmar in the communications, broadcasting, and postal sectors, and held talks with a number of other key government officials, including HE Mr. Thant Sin Maung, Minister for Transport and Communications, and HE Dr. Pe Myint, Minister of Information.
In addition, she delivered a greeting speech at a workshop on cybersecurity on behalf of the organizer.

The results of her visit in detail are described below.

1. Talks with HE Mr. Thant Sin Maung, Minister for Transport and Communications

State Minister Sato exchanged views on the progress of the cooperation of both countries in the communications, broadcasting, and postal sectors, and confirmed the enhancement of deeper relations in the future.

2. Talks with HE Dr. Pe Myint, Minister of Information

She exchanged views on the reinforcement of the capacity of Myanmar Radio and Television (the parent of state-run Myanmar Radio National Service), establishment of a program production company through the collaboration of Japan and Myanmar, collaborative production of broadcast contents, and relevant matters, and confirmed the continuation and reinforcement of the efforts of both countries.

3. Greeting Speech at a Workshop on Cybersecurity on Behalf of the Organizer

In order to further strengthen the cooperative relations of Japan and Myanmar, including capacity building in the field of cybersecurity, she delivered a greeting speech on behalf of the organizer of a workshop for Myanmar’s government officials held by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and emphasized the importance of national-level cybersecurity measures.

4. Others

She visited the Yangon Central Post Office, where Japanese experts are providing technical guidance for an ODA technical cooperation project, and held talks with H.E. Mr. Kham Aung, Managing Director of Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications on the results of the past cooperation and further efforts of both countries. In addition, she visited a post office and confirmed the status of Myanmar’s post service improved through Japan’s support.
