October 15, 2019 Start of Field Operational Tests of Autonomous Driving in Tokyo Waterfront Area

Towards Realization of Autonomous Driving Society from Tokyo

Under the Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) Phase Two – Automated Driving (Expansion of Systems and Services), the Cabinet Secretariat, the Cabinet Office, the National Police Agency, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism have decided to start a series of field operational tests of autonomous driving in sequence in the Tokyo waterfront area. From today, the tests will be conducted in sequence with the participation of a total of 28 organizations, including domestic and overseas automakers, auto parts manufacturers, and universities, with the aim of realizing a safe and comfortable autonomous driving society through infrastructure-coordinated autonomous driving technology. The tests will utilize signal information from traffic infrastructure on general roads and information on confluence support for expressways.
