November 7, 2019 Started Providing Space Weather Information to ICAO

The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT, headed by Dr. Hideyuki Tokuda, President) as a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Global Space Weather Center will start providing information (space weather information) on the impact on communications and satellite positioning, radiation exposure, etc.
When the sun’s activity becomes high, radio wave usage, such as communications and satellite positioning may be affected, especially at high latitudes, and the risk of exposure to human bodies may increase. ICAO has recently started providing space weather information to civilian airlines, and NICT has participated in this ICAO initiative along with related overseas organizations. NIC will provide the state of space weather over and around Japan as well as forecast information up to 24 hours later.
