January 21, 2020 MIC starts discussion on the Beyond 5G strategies

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will hold a Roundtable Meetings on Strategies for Promoting Beyond 5G to formulate a comprehensive strategy based on the needs and technological development expected when “Beyond 5G”, the next generation to 5G, is launched. This roundtable will discuss the direction of policies for realizing desirable Beyond 5G.

1.Background and purpose

Currenty brand new 5G services are to be launched, while Beyond 5G, the next generation to 5G technology, is expected to be launched around 2030.

The smooth launch of Beyond 5G is essential to the further progress of Society 5.0, a data-driven society, as well as for sustainable economic growth. While discussions on Beyond 5G have just started in other countries, for Japan to be deeply committing to a process on establishing international standards, it is necessary to start early efforts to develop a comprehensive strategy (roadmap) for Beyond 5G based on the needs and technological development expected at the time of its launch.

Accordingly, MIC will hold the roundtable meetings to formulate a comprehensive strategy for Beyond 5G.

    Key technologies to realize Beyond 5G
  • 3.
    Desired environment for the smooth introduction of Beyond 5G and strenghening international competitiveness

3.Date and time

The first roundtable meeting will be held at MIC’s Ministry Meeting Room (on the 7th floor of Central Government Building No. 2) from 4:30 pm on Monday, January 27, 2020., The first report of results of the roundtable will be published by summarized around the summer of the year.
