November 27, 2020 Launching “Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center” and Holding Kick-off Symposium

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) in cooperation with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) will launch the “Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center” based on “Beyond 5G Promotion Strategy―Roadmap to 6G” (June 2020). The Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center aims to accelerate acquisition of Intellectual Property and global standardization under industry-academia-government cooperation strategically. Furthermore, MIC and NICT will hold a kick-off symposium before the Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center comes into operation.

1. Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center

MIC had been holding Beyond 5G Promotion Strategy Roundtable meetings (chaired by Dr. GONOKAMI Makoto, President of the University of Tokyo) since January 2020. This Roundtable aimed to formulate a comprehensive strategy by considering the needs and technological progress of communications expected when introducing Beyond 5G, the next generation of 5G. In this connection, MIC released a report entitled “Beyond 5G Promotion Strategy―Roadmap to 6G”.
The report proposed promotion of activities for acquisition of IP and global standardization strategically by establishing system for global standardization. In this connection, the Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center (co-headed by Dr. MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo and Dr. YANAGAWA Noriyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo) will be launched. The Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center aims to accelerate acquisition of Intellectual Property and global standardization with the participation of major industry-academia-government players. Its secretariat will be NICT.
