December 18, 2020 Appeal for Opinions on Draft Report of the Working Group on the Future Image of Satellite Broadcasting

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will make an appeal for opinions from Saturday, December 19 through Friday, January 22, 2021, on a report drafted by the Working Group on the Future Image of Satellite Broadcasting (Chief Investigator: ITO Susumu, part-time professor, Department of Electrical and Electronic Information Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, Tokyo University of Science).

1. Background

MIC organized the Working Group on the Future Image of Satellite Broadcasting in February 2018 to grasp the current situation and issues surrounding satellite broadcasting in Japan and consider the future of satellite broadcasting due to the sophistication of broadcasting. This working group, which has been working under the Study Group on Various Issues over Broadcasting (chaired by TAGAYA Kazuteru, Professor Emeritus at Chiba University), released a report* in September 2018.
Since then, the situation surrounding satellite broadcasting has made significant changes. These changes include the start of new 4K/8K satellite broadcasting in December 2018, a further expansion of Internet video distribution services, institutional revisions for effective frequency use in response to the report, and the impact of the spread of novel coronavirus infection. Then new issues to be discussed and studied have arisen. Accordingly, discussions in the working group resumed in April 2020.
The discussions have recently been summarized into the draft report of the Working Group on the Future Image of Satellite Broadcasting. Accordingly, MIC has decided to make an appeal for opinions on the draft report.
