May 25, 2020 Holding Study Meetings on the Ideal State of Periodic Inspections of Advanced Land Wireless Systems

With consideration of the current status and issues of advanced land wireless systems, such as 5G system base stations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will hold study meetings on the ideal state of periodic inspections of advanced land wireless systems.

1. Background and purpose

Base stations of 5G systems are provided with a mechanism that generates frequencies by taking in external signals, such as GPS signals, and designed to monitor from a distance that the base stations are operating normally. However, due to the miniaturization of the antennas, it is difficult to install antenna terminals for measurement use and connect measuring instruments to check the electrical characteristics of the antennas. With consideration of these conditions, the Information and Communications Council issued a report in March of this year, which states that it is desirable to further study methods of periodic inspections in the future, based on a mechanism that can ensure and monitor the normal operation of base stations.
It is assumed that new wireless systems will have similar functions and structures, and existing land wireless stations will also have similar functions in the future. Accordingly, MIC has decided to hold study meetings to examine the ideal state of periodic inspections of advanced land wireless systems.

2. Key considerations

Conditions that simplify the measurement of the electrical characteristics of advanced land wireless systems during periodic inspections

3. Schedule considered

The MIC will hold the first meeting on May 28, 2020, and expect to summarize a report around the summer of 2020.
