June 23, 2020 Launch of MIC-Telecom Emergency Assistance Members (MIC-TEAM)

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has launched a team named the MIC-Telecom Emergency Assistance Members (MIC-TEAM for short). In times of large-scale disaster, MIC-TEAM will provide disaster response support in terms of information and communications through precise reporting and coordination based on the needs of all disaster-stricken areas for ensuring means of information and communications.

MIC has been conducting a review of Japan’s process of recovery from communications failures, initial response to communications failures, and technical support for local governments based on MIC’s experience of long-term communication failures caused by Typhoon Faxai (also known as the Reiwa 1 Boso Peninsula Typhoon) and Typhoon Hagibis (also known as the Reiwa 1 East Japan Typhoon).
Based on this review, MIC has launched the Telecom Emergency Assistance Members (MIC-TEAM) to support disaster response in terms of information and communications towards the securement of means of information and communications through precise reporting and coordination.
The MIC-TEAM consists of officials selected from MIC, Regional Bureaus of Telecommunications, and the Okinawa Office of Telecommunications.
If a large-scale disaster occurs or is likely to occur, MIC-TEAM members will be dispatched to local governments in the disaster area to grasp the disaster situation of information and communication services and to contact and coordinate with relevant administrative agencies and businesses.
Furthermore, MIC-TEAM members will provide technical advice to local governments and loan mobile power supply vehicles.
In light of the recent increase in the risk of large-scale natural disasters, MIC will work to secure means of information and communications in times of disaster.
