September 18, 2020 Announcement of Quarterly Data on the Number of Telecommunications Service Contracts and Market Share (FY2020 Q1 (End of June))

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has recently summarized the number of subscribers of telecommunications services and the market share in the first quarter of fiscal 2020 (as of the end of June). This announcement is based on reports from telecommunications carriers under the provisions of the Rules for Reporting on Telecommunications Business (Ministerial Ordinance of MPT No. 46 of 1988).

Main points

1. Mobile communications

(Note: The number of contracts is adjusted after intra-group transactions unless otherwise specified.)

1. Mobile communications (mobile phone, PHS, BWA)

  • Number of contracts for mobile communications (mobile phone, PHS, and BWA contracts; the same applies hereafter): 188.46 million (up 1.0% from the previous quarter, up 3.5% from the same quarter of the previous year, and 260.99 million in simple total)
  • Number of contracts for mobile phones: 186.91 million (up 1.1% from the previous quarter and up 4.0% from the same quarter of the previous year)
  • Number of contracts for 3.9-4th generation (LTE) mobile phones: 155.65 million (up 2.0% from the previous quarter and up 10.5% from the same quarter of the previous year); Number of contracts for 5th generation mobile phones: 0.33 million (up 0.3 million from the previous quarter)
  • Number of contracts for PHS: 1.46 million (down 9.7% from the previous quarter and down 26.5% from the same quarter of the previous year)
  • Number of contracts for BWA: 72.51 million (up 1.8% from the previous quarter and up 7.2% from the same quarter of the previous year)
  • Share of contracts for mobile communications per business operator (per group):
    • NTT Docomo: 37.1% (down 0.2 points from the previous quarter and down 0.6 points from the same quarter of the previous year; 42.8% including those related to service provision to MVNOs)
    • KDDI Group: 27.6% (down 0.1 points from the previous quarter and up 0.2 points from the same quarter of the previous year; 31.4%, including those related to service provision to MVNOs)
    • SoftBank Group: 21.6% (No change from the previous quarter and down 0.9 points from the same quarter of the previous year; 25.5% including those related to service provision to MVNOs)

2. MVNO

  • Number of contracts for MVNO services*: 25.31 million (up 2.4% from the previous quarter and up 13.2% from the same quarter of the previous year)
  • Percentage of mobile communications contracts: 13.4% (up 0.2 points from the previous quarter and up 1.2 points from the same quarter of the previous year)

2. Fixed communications

1. Data communications

  • Number of contracts for fixed broadband services: 41.57 million (up 0.9% from the previous quarter and up 2.6% from the same quarter of the previous year)
  • Number of contracts of fixed ultra-high-speed broadband services*1: 38.12 million (up 2.8% from the previous quarter and up 5.9% from the same quarter of the previous year)
  • Number of contracts of FTTH services: 33.58 million (up 1.5% from the previous quarter and up 4.8% from the same quarter of the previous year)
  • Share of FTTH subscribers per business operator:
    • Nippon Telegraph & Telephone East and Nippon Telegraph & Telephone West (hereafter referred to as NTT East and West): 22.8% (down 0.7 points from the previous quarter and down 2.8 points from the same quarter of the previous year; 65.3%, including those related to the provision of wholesale telecommunications services*2)
    • KDDI: 6.7% (No change from the previous quarter and down 0.2 points from the same quarter of the previous year; 11.9% including those related to the provision of wholesale telecommunications services)
    • OPTAGE: 4.6% (No change from the previous quarter and down 0.2 points from the same quarter of the previous year)
  • The number of FTTH contracts provided using wholesale telecommunications services is 17.36 million, accounting for 51.7% of the entire FTTH contracts (up 0.5 points from the previous quarter and down 1.9 points from the same quarter of the previous year. Out of them, 14.26 million contracts were provided using wholesale telecommunications services of NTT East and West, accounting for 82.1% of the total number of contracts provided using wholesale telecommunications services (up 0.1 points from the previous year and up 0.3 points from the same quarter of the previous year).

    A total of FTTH and CATV Internet (coaxial/HFC) services with a downlink communications speed of 30 Mbps or more.

2. Voice communications

  • Number of landline contracts: 53.43 million (down 0.5% from the previous quarter and down 1.4% from the same period of the previous year)
  • NTT East and West’s share of landline contracts: 65.8% (down 0.2 points from the previous quarter and down 1.0 point from the same period of the previous year)
  • IP phone numbers used: 44.30 million (up 0.4% from the previous quarter and up 1.8% from the same period of the previous year), which included 35.29 million 0ABJ numbers (up 0.2% from the previous quarter and up 1.9% from the same period of the previous year)
  • Share of the 0ABJ numbers used for IP phones per business operator:
    • NTT East and West: 52.5% (No change from the previous quarter and down 0.2 points from the same period of the previous year)
    • KDDI: 33.1% (down 0.1 points from the previous quarter and down 0.8 points from the same period of the previous year
