Designing New Business Strategy in the Beyond 5G Era—A View of the Future from Different Perspectives

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will sponsor the sixth new business strategy seminar for the Beyond 5G era. This seminar is an initiative of the Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center (co-headed by MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, and YANAGAWA Noriyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo).

1. Purpose

On December 18, 2020, MIC launched the Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center (co-headed by MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, and YANAGAWA Noriyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo). The purpose of the Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center is to strategically acquire intellectual property and standardize with the participation of major industry-academia-government players toward the Beyond 5G era.
The Center encourages private companies, universities, and other organizations to proactively and strategically promote the formation of markets and new market entry, the development and social implementation of innovative technologies and services by making full use of intellectual property and standardization. Therefore, MIC will support these efforts, provide reference information and,a place for collaboration, and promote dissemination and enlightenment.
As part of the efforts of the Center, the sixth new business strategy seminar for the Beyond 5G era under the theme of “under the theme of Designing New Business Strategy in the Beyond 5G Era—A View of the Future from Different Perspectives” will be held for corporate managers, IP department managers, international standardization and R&D department managers, researchers, etc.

1. Lectures

Lecture 1: The Japan Patent Office’s Approach to Design-Driven Management and Its Future

IWASAKI Susumu: Chief Design Officer (CDO), Japan Patent Office/Deputy Commissioner
The Japan Patent Office launched a design-driven management project team in 2018 and has been working to improve the quality of government services through the team’s activities. This lecture will introduce basic issues, including the concept of design-driven management and why we need design consideration. In addition, the lecture will introduce what kind of results the Japan Patent Office has achieved through its efforts up to now and what kind of efforts it plans to implement in the future.

Lecture 2: Treasure Hunting—New Value Creation Brought about by the Encounter between Researchers and Designers

YAMANAKA Shunji: Professor, Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo
In the past few years, designers and researchers have been collaborating to create prototypes one after another at the University of Tokyo to explore new values created by the interaction of advanced technology and humans. This lecture will describe examples of such value-creating designs, and it will also introduce attempts to develop hybrid human resources familiar with engineering and art to support these activities.
