February 19, 2021 Results of the 2020 broadband service coverage rate surveys in Japan
Every year the Ministry of Internal affairs and Communications (MIC), Japan, carries out surveys on the coverage rate of broadband services (fiber, cable, fixed broadband, and mobile broadband, etc.) for the further growth and development of the country’s information communication infrastructure.
The MIC today released the survey results on the coverage rate of fiber optic broadband services (FTTH) for households in Japan as of the end of March 2020.
1. Coverage rate survey on broadband services
The MIC carried out a survey on broadband service areas with telecommunications carriers that provide broadband services to general subscribers, via the facilities of the carrier, including telecommunications carriers that provide services under IRU contracts to lease facilities developed by local governments. Based on the information obtained from the telecommunications carriers and the data of the Basic Resident Register, the MIC compiled the broadband service coverage rate by dividing the estimated number of households in each area with the total number of households (rounded off to two decimal places).
Note: As actual service coverage may vary depending on the geographical conditions of each area and the facilities buildings, it is possible that there may be errors.
