March 10, 2021 Report from the Radio Regulatory Council on Request to Japan Broadcasting Corporation for Implementation of International Broadcasting for FY2021

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) submitted an inquiry today about a request to Japan Broadcasting Corporation (also called NHK for short, headed by MAEDA Terunobu, President) to implement international broadcasting to the Radio Regulatory Council (Chaired by HIBINO Takashi, Chairman of the Board, Daiwa Securities Group Inc.) and received a report stating its approval as inquired.
In response to today’s report, MIC will request NHK on April 1, 2021, if the Diet’s approval for the necessary budget is made by the same day.

    Under the provisions of Article 65, Paragraph 1 of the Broadcasting Act (Act No. 132 of 1950), the Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications may specify broadcasting districts, broadcasting content, and other important matters, and request NHK to provide international broadcasting or international satellite broadcasting by NHK.
    The costs required for international broadcasting or international satellite broadcasting conducted by NHK following the request under Article 65, paragraph (1) and the costs needed for the research conducted by NHK on receiving the order under paragraph (1) of the preceding Article are to be borne by the national government.

    MIC has today submitted an inquiry to the Radio Regulatory Council about a request to NHK to implement international broadcasting and received a report stating its approval as inquired. Accordingly, MIC will request NHK on April 1, 2021, if the Diet’s approval for the necessary budget is made by the same date.
