May 20, 2021 Appeal for Opinions on Draft Report on Ideal State of Public Telephones in Response to Changes in Socio-economic Environment

The Telecommunications Business Policy Committee (chaired by MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo) of the Information and Communications Council drafted a report at its meeting on May 19, 2021. This draft report was made in response to inquiry No. 1231 on the ideal state of public telephones in response to changes in the socio-economic environment, dated January 22, 2021, issued by the Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will make an appeal for opinions on the draft report from Friday, May 21 through Monday, June 21, 2021.

1. Background

The Information and Communications Council received the inquiry on the ideal state of public telephones in response to changes in the socio-economic environment, dated Friday, January 22, 2021, issued by the Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications. In response to this inquiry, the Telecommunications Business Policy Committee and the Universal Service Policy Subcommittee continued studying and deliberating the matter.
The draft report was compiled at the 56th meeting of the Telecommunications Business Policy Committee held on May 19, 2021. Accordingly, MIC has decided to make this appeal for opinions on the draft report from Friday, May 21 through Monday, June 21, 2021.
