May 31, 2021 Appeal for Proposals on Technical Conditions for Advanced Utilization of Wireless LANs as Part of Technical Requirements for Upgrading Low-power Wireless Communications Systems

The Land Radiocommunication Subcommittee (Chief Investigator: ANDO Makoto, professor emeritus at Tokyo Institute of Technology) of the Department on Information and Communications Technology under the Information and Communications Council started studying technical conditions for the advanced utilization of wireless LAN systems on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, as part of the technical requirements for upgrading low-power wireless communications systems.
To contribute to its research and study, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will make an appeal for proposals on technical conditions for the advanced utilization of wireless LAN systems from Tuesday, June 1 through Wednesday, June 30, 2021.

Technical conditions related to advanced utilization of wireless LAN systems

1. Background of deliberation

The utilization of wireless LANs is expanding in stations and tourist spots as well as homes and offices. In response to this situation, wireless LANs are required to meet society’s demand for expanding frequencies and upgrading wireless LAN systems. The 2019 ITU World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-19) stipulated sharing conditions with satellite communications systems, and WRC-19 revised the Radio Regulations (RR) to enable 5.2 GHz band frequencies (ranging from 5150 to 5250 MHz) available to wireless LANS for outdoor use. Furthermore, a study on frequency sharing is in progress in other countries, including the United States, to introduce a license-free system to radio systems, such as wireless LANs, in the 6 GHz band (ranging from 5925 to 7125 MHz).
Considering this international trend and the needs of domestic users, the Land Radiocommunication Subcommittee started studying the necessary technical conditions for the advanced utilization of wireless LANs in the 5.2 GHz band and 6 GHz band in Japan.

2. Deliberation content

The Land Radiocommunication Subcommittee will deliberate on technical conditions for the advanced utilization of wireless LAN systems as part of the technical requirements for upgrading low-power wireless communications systems. The Department on Information and Communications Technology will make a report on this matter around Mach 2022.

2. Appeal for proposals on technical conditions

Outline of appeal for proposals
To contribute to the research and study of the Land Radiocommunication Subcommittee, MIC has decided to make this appeal for proposals on technical conditions for the advanced utilization of wireless LAN systems from Tuesday, June 1 through Wednesday, June 30, 2021.
