June 3, 2021 Launch of Japan-U.S. Global Digital Connectivity Partnership

Japan and the United States have jointly launched the Japan-U.S. Global Digital Connectivity Partnership and started concrete discussions based on the outcome document of the Japan-U.S. Summit Meeting.

1. Promotion of Japan-U.S. Global Digital Connectivity Partnership

The Japan-U.S. Global Digital Connectivity Partnership (GDCP) has been launched as announced in the outcome document issued after the Japan-U.S. summit meeting between Prime Minister SUGA Yoshihide and His Excellency U.S. President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. on April 16, 2021. The GDCP aims to promote secure connectivity and vibrant digital economies.
Both governments have agreed to begin discussions between the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) and the U.S. Department of State (USDS) in the framework of the Director General-Level Meeting of the Japan-U.S. Policy Cooperation Dialogue on the Internet Economy to discuss concrete cooperation in the GDCP.
On May 27, a joint working group attended by relevant ministries and agencies of both governments was held online. The participants discussed cooperation in third countries, including those in the Indo-Pacific region, Africa, and Latin America, cooperation in a multilateral framework, and both governments’ promotion of 5G and Beyond 5G toward secure connectivity and vibrant digital economies.

2. Future plans

Based on the discussions in this joint working group, both governments will further promote Japan-U.S. cooperation in the GDCP and have decided to hold the next Japan-U.S. Policy Cooperation Dialogue on the Internet Economy by the end of this year while further strengthening the competitiveness of both countries.
