5. Overview

Amid major changes in industrial structure, the environment surrounding standards and intellectual property, which are the basis for innovation creation, is undergoing drastic changes. With the increasing importance of SEPs* in developing the European industry, the European Commission has taken initiatives to involve experts and stakeholders. These initiatives include (1) The Action plan on IP (2020), (2) The EU SEP Expert Group Report, and (3) Five SEP Round Table Webinars, which have been held since the end of 2020.
This seminar will feature two speakers, Ms. Adriana Van Rooden, who has played a central role in these activities at the European Commission, and Mr. Ruud Peters, who has played a central role in the EU SEP Expert Group from a corporate perspective. They will talk about the issues surrounding SEPs in Europe and the direction of solutions and discuss hints on how Japan and companies should approach these issues.
