September 13, 2021 Status of Revenues and Expenses of Private Broadcasters in FY2020

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has recently summarized the state of the fiscal 2020 revenues and expenses of private broadcasters.

1. Overview

The fiscal 2020 state of the revenues and expenses is outlined as follows:

1. Terrestrial basic broadcasters

As for terrestrial basic broadcasters (excluding community broadcasters), their sales decreased (11.7% year-on-year), and operating income also decreased (26.1% year-on-year) from the previous fiscal year.
As for community broadcasters^*, their sales decreased (10.3% year-on-year), and operating income also decreased from the previous fiscal year.

2. Satellite broadcasters

As for satellite broadcasters (satellite basic broadcasters and satellite general broadcasters), the operating revenue of their satellite broadcasting business decreased (6.5% year-on-year), but the operating income increased (2.2% year-on-year) from the previous fiscal year.

3. Cable television broadcasters

For cable television broadcasters^*, the operating revenue of their cable television business was flat (no changes from the previous fiscal year), while operating income increased (14.7% year-on-year) from the previous fiscal year.
