October 21, 2022 Announcement of the Status of Development of 5G (at the end of FY2021)

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has recently summarized the status of development of 5G at the end of FY2021 based on the reports from mobile phone carriers.

1. Outline

In March 2022, MIC formulated and announced the Infrastructure Development Plan for a Digital Garden City Nation, in which MIC aims to achieve the following targets:

  • 5G population coverage nationwide: 95% at the end of FY2023, 97% at the end of FY2025, and 99% at the end of FY2030
  • 5G population coverage by prefecture: 90% or more at the end of FY2025 and 99% at the end of FY2030 in each prefecture.

MIC has recently summarized the status of development of 5G at the end of FY2021 based on the reports from mobile phone carriers (NTT Docomo Inc., KDDI Corporation, Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company, SoftBank Corp., and Rakuten Mobile, Inc.).
