October 31, 2022 Results of the Japan-Singapore Roundtable on AI Governance

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) today co-hosted the Japan-Singapore Roundtable on AI Governance with the Infocomm Media Development Authority of the Republic of Singapore.

1. Background

In July 2021, a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the information and communications field between Japan and the Republic of Singapore (hereafter referred to as "Singapore") was signed by Mr. TAKEDA Ryota, then Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, and H.E. Ms. Josephine TEO, Minister for Communications and Information. AI was one of the areas of cooperation in the memorandum, with the two countries committing to the exchange of information on best practices and policies relating to AI, and mutual recognition of the importance of the creation and international harmonization of frameworks for the safe, progressive use of AI.
Moreover, in a joint statement between MIC and Singapore's Ministry of Communications and Information on further promotion of cooperation in the field of information and communications technology issued this past July (signed by Mr. KANEKO Yasushi, then Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, and H.E. Ms. Josephine TEO, Minister for Communications and Information), the two countries stated that they would undertake more in-depth discussion of AI governance.
MIC and the Infocomm Media Development Authority, an organization under the umbrella of Singapore's Ministry of Communications and Information, recently co-hosted this meeting to share information about AI governance initiatives in both countries, in order to flesh out the initiatives described in the aforementioned memorandum of understanding and joint statement, and further strengthen cooperative relations between the two countries.

2. Overview of meeting

The program for the meeting was as follows.
Introduction to initiatives by MIC and the Infocomm Media Development Authority.
Introduction to initiatives by Singaporean companies.
Introduction to initiatives by Japanese companies.
Exchange of views by meeting participants regarding measures to achieve responsible AI.

3. Future plans

MIC will continue to promote cooperation with Singapore relating to AI and other realms in the field of information and communications.
