Announcement of the seminar under the theme “Prospects for the Metaverse for the Beyond 5G Era”

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will sponsor the twelfth New Business Strategy Seminar for the Beyond 5G Era. This seminar is an initiative of the Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center (co-headed by MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, and YANAGAWA Noriyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo).

1. Purpose

Launched by MIC in December 2020, the Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center (co-headed by MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, and YANAGAWA Noriyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo) works with the Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium and relevant ministries, agencies, and organizations to strategically promote intellectual property acquisition and international standardization related to Beyond 5G.

As part of its initiatives, the Center will hold the twelfth New Business Strategy Seminar for the Beyond 5G Era under the theme of “Prospects for the Metaverse for the Beyond 5G Era” to provide information about the latest intellectual property and standardization trends and business strategies, with the aim of promoting intellectual property and international standardization strategy.

Seminar outline

This seminar will focus on the themes of metaverse usage scenarios expected to generate social transformation and business opportunities in the Beyond 5G era, the key technologies and intellectual property that will support this, and the formation of rules, including international standardization.

The keynote speakers will be Mr. MABUCHI Kuniyoshi, former director of Facebook Japan K.K. and current President of Metaverse Japan; Mr. KAWADA Tomu, member of AR Three Brothers, a unit that has developed numerous augmented reality (AR) works for the worlds of art, fashion, and museums; and Professor ETOH Minoru of Osaka University's Institute for Open and Transdisciplinary Research Initiatives, who is currently a member of MIC's Study Group on the Use of the Metaverse, etc. to Usher in the Web3 Era and has previously been an executive officer at NTT DOCOMO, Inc. and President of NTT DOCOMO Ventures, Inc. Among the topics they will discuss will be the following:

  • What Japanese companies should do to capture new business opportunities arising from future social transformation brought about by the metaverse.
  • Innovation generated by the metaverse, promising usage scenarios, and intellectual property for bringing these to fruition.
  • Key points to enable Japan to play a leading role in the global transformation brought about by the metaverse, key technologies, and international standardization in the Beyond 5G era.

In the panel discussion, the speakers will discuss topics including metaverse initiatives and prospects from the perspectives of the broader future of the metaverse, promising usage scenarios, and intellectual property and international standardization, based on the content of their keynote addresses. The speakers will also take questions from the floor.
