November 24, 2022 Results of GPAI Summit 2022

From Monday, November 21 through Tuesday, November 22, 2022, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry held the GPAI Summit 2022, which is the annual general assembly of the international public-private cooperation initiative regarding AI at Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo, and Mr. TSUGE Yoshifumi, State Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, and Ms. KUNIMITSU Ayano, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, attended the meeting.

2. Outline of the event

GPAI Summit 2022 was held as the third annual general assembly of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), an international public-private cooperation organization established to realize responsible development and use of AI from a human-centered perspective.
In the summit, it was decided that Japan will serve as the chair of the initiative for a period of one year, from November 2022.

3. Achievements of GPAI Summit 2022

At the opening of the meeting, State Minister Tsuge pointed out the importance of the principle of responsible AI in today's society, expressed a feeling of gratitude for the efforts by Canada and France in the inauguration of GPAI, and mentioned the aspiration of Japan in resolving social issues with AI.
At the ministerial-level meeting, in which the GPAI member states (24 countries + EU) participated, Kunimitsu Parliamentary Vice-Minister served as the chair. The meeting adopted the first Ministers' Declaration for GPAI Summit, confirming that the member states welcome the promotion of a resilient and peaceful society through AI deployment and empowerment of citizens under GPAI priorities.
In addition, various achievement of the following working groups of experts participating in GPAI were announced at the experts' meeting: (i) Responsible AI, (ii) Data governance, (iii) The future of work, and (iv) Innovation and commercialization. Also, many side events were held under the initiative of relevant parties of AI in Japan and abroad, and they attracted many participants.
