November 25, 2022 Publication of the Report of the Study Group on New Allocation Methods for Mobile Phone Frequencies and Results of Solicitation of Opinions

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has been holding the Study Group on New Allocation Methods for Mobile Phone Frequencies (chaired by YANAGAWA Noriyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Economics, The University of Tokyo) from October 2021, to further promote the effective use of radio waves in light of the rapid increase in the need to use mobile phone frequencies. The Study Group compiled the draft of the Report of the Study Group on New Allocation Methods for Mobile Phone Frequencies. MIC solicited public opinions on the draft from Friday, September 30 through Monday, October 31, 2022, and received 23 opinions. Accordingly, MIC has decided to publish the Report of the Study Group on New Allocation Methods for Mobile Phone Frequencies, along with the results of the solicitation of opinions.

1. Background

In Japan, the need for mobile phone frequencies is rapidly increasing due to the introduction of 5G, and there is a growing need to further promote the effective use of radio waves.
Following this, MIC has launched the Study Group on New Allocation Methods for Mobile Phone Frequencies in October 2021 to conduct a survey and analysis of frequency allocation methods of foreign countries, and consider new allocation methods for mobile phone frequencies in Japan, learning from the merits etc. of the frequency allocation methods of foreign countries from the results of the survey and analysis.
The Study Group compiled the draft of the Report of the Study Group on New Allocation Methods for Mobile Phone Frequencies. MIC solicited public opinions on the draft from Friday, September 30 through Monday, October 31, 2022, and received 23 opinions. Accordingly, MIC has decided to publish the Report of the Study Group on New Allocation Methods for Mobile Phone Frequencies, along with the results of the solicitation of public opinions.
