November 28, 2022 Holding Advisory Board for Utilizing Post Office Data

Aiming to obtain advice from experts upon the implementation of efforts by Japan Post Holdings and Japan Post and measures implemented by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) mentioned in the Roadmap for Promoting the Utilization of Post Office Data, which was published in July 2022, MIC holds the Advisory Board for Utilizing Post Office Data.

1. Background and purpose

In order to promote the effective utilization of data possessed and obtained by post offices (hereinafter referred to as the "Post Office Data"), while ensuring the confidentiality of correspondence and the appropriate handling of personal information and other persons' secrets, MIC has been holding the Study Group on Utilizing Post Office Data and Ideal Privacy Protection from October 2021 and revising the explanation of the Guidelines for the Protection of Personal Information in the Postal Service Sector (Notice of the Personal Information Protection Commission and MIC No. 2 of 2022, hereinafter referred to as the "Postal Service Sector Guidelines"). It published the basic idea for the utilization of Post Office Data, the efforts by Japan Post Holdings and Japan Post and measures implemented by MIC as the Roadmap for Promoting the Utilization of Post Office Data on July 29, 2022.
MIC will hold the Advisory Board for Utilizing Post Office Data with an aim to obtain advice from experts upon the implementation of efforts and measures mentioned in the Roadmap for Promoting the Utilization of Post Office Data.

2. Matters discussed

(1) Advice on the specific operation of data provision to public-sector organizations (disaster, tax, inquiries from bar associations) additionally included in the explanation of the Postal Service Sector Guidelines
(2) Regular follow-up on measures regarding data utilization by Japan Post Holdings and Japan Post
(3) Exchange of opinions on new needs for Post Office Data
(4) Additional inclusion of information in the Postal Service Sector Guidelines based on the new needs
