Announcement of the seminar under the theme "Industry-University-Government Collaboration to Promote Human Augmentation Technology and Superhuman Sports for the Beyond 5G Era, and Associated Developments in IP and Standardization"

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will hold the 13th New Business Strategy Seminar for the Beyond 5G Era on January 13. Focusing on superhuman sports and human augmentation technology, which offer promising usage scenarios for Beyond 5G, this seminar will provide the latest information about R&D, industry-university-government collaboration, and associated developments relating to intellectual property (IP) and international standardization. The speakers at the seminar will be Professor INAMI Masahiko of the University of Tokyo, Dr. MOCHIMARU Masaaki of the Human Augmentation Research Center (HARC) at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), and Mr. SAWABE Yoshiaki, CEO of 1-10, Inc.

1. Purpose

Launched by MIC in December 2020, the Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center (co-headed by MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, and YANAGAWA Noriyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo) works with the Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium and relevant ministries, agencies, and organizations to strategically promote intellectual property acquisition and international standardization related to Beyond 5G.
As part of its initiatives, the Center will hold the 13th New Business Strategy Seminar for the Beyond 5G Era under the theme of "Industry-University-Government Collaboration to Promote Human Augmentation Technology and Superhuman Sports, and Associated Developments in IP and Standardization" to provide information about the latest intellectual property and standardization trends and business strategies, with the aim of promoting intellectual property and international standardization strategy.

Seminar outline

This seminar will focus on the theme of human augmentation technology and superhuman sports, whose industrialization is being pursued through industry-university-government collaboration. In addition to the latest trends in R&D and industrialization, and usage scenarios expected in the Beyond 5G era, the discussion will encompass the promotion of social implementation via collaboration between industry, academia, and government, the use of IP, and the formation of rules, including international standardization.
The keynote speakers will be Professor INAMI Masahiko of the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo, who also serves as joint representative of the Superhuman Sports Society; Dr. MOCHIMARU Masaaki, who undertakes R&D focused on human augmentation technology and superhuman sports as Director of AIST's Human Augmentation Research Center; and Mr. SAWABE Yoshiaki, CEO of 1-10, Inc., a company renowned for its development of appealing cybersports products such as Cyber Boccia and Cyber Wheel, which won the Runner-up Prize at the Cabinet Office's Cool Japan Matching Award 2019. Among the topics they will discuss will be the following:

  • An outline of human augmentation technology and superhuman sports, industry-university-government collaboration initiatives aimed at their industrialization, and future prospects for such initiatives.
  • R&D trends relating to human augmentation technology, industry-university-government collaboration initiatives aimed at social implementation and the construction of an ecosystem, and key points relating to standardization strategy.
  • The current status of and issues facing the superhuman sports business, examples of the use of IP, and prospects for new business that will emerge from its combination with Beyond 5G.

In the panel discussion, the speakers will discuss topics including the directions that Beyond 5G will open up for human augmentation technology and superhuman sports, communications infrastructure issues that will need to be resolved to this end, the industry-university-government collaboration required to speed up industrialization and social implementation, and associated initiatives and prospects from the perspectives of intellectual property and international standardization, based on the content of their keynote addresses. The speakers will also take questions from the floor.
