March 17, 2022 Release of “Progress Report 2021 on Beyond 5G Promotion Strategy”

In June 2020, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) developed “Beyond 5G Promotion Strategy―Roadmap towards 6G―” and has carried out initiatives based on this roadmap since then.
MIC has compiled a report on the status of progress and the future initiatives titled “Progress Report 2021 on Beyond 5G Promotion Strategy.”

1. Outline

MIC had held “Beyond 5G Promotion Strategy Roundtable” (chaired by GONOKAMI Makoto, 30th President of the University of Tokyo) since January 2020. This roundtable aimed to formulate a comprehensive strategy with consideration of the needs and technological progress expected at the time of the introduction of Beyond 5G, the next generation after 5G, and studied communications infrastructure items expected for the society of the 2030s, where Beyond 5G will be introduced, as well as the direction of policies to realize these items. In June 2020, in response to the recommendations from the roundtable, MIC released “Beyond 5G Promotion Strategy―Roadmap towards 6G―,” and has carried out initiatives based on this roadmap since then.
MIC has compiled a report on the status of progress of these initiatives.

2. Progress report

Gatherings and events to be held on Friday, March 18, 2022 (3rd General Assembly of the Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium; white paper release event by the White Paper Subcommittee; and kick-off event by the Open RAN Promotion Subcommittee, Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium, February 28, 2022)

3. Future schedule

Based on this progress report, MIC will continue to promote initiatives necessary for realizing Beyond 5G in cooperation with related ministries and agencies.
