March 22, 2022 Technical Requirements for Wider Band Use of 920 MHz Low-Power Radio Stations

Partial report from Information and Communications Council

On March 22, 2022, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received a partial report from the Information and Communications Council (Chaired by UCHIYAMADA Takeshi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Toyota Motor Corporation) concerning technical requirements for the wider band use of 920 MHz low-power radio stations as part of the technical requirements for upgrading low-power wireless communications systems (Inquiry No. 2009, dated September 30, 2002).

1. Background

Active systems among low-power radio stations in the 920 MHz band are used for a variety of applications mainly for relatively small-data communication, such as smart meters and sensor networks. In recent years, there has been growing demand not only for low-transfer rate narrowband communication systems but also for wireless systems that provide broadband communication to meet new types of needs, such as transmitting images from security cameras and updating firmware of robots and other devices with high functionality. An international standard has been developed for these systems (IEEE802.11ah), showing that the demand has been growing internationally as well.
In light of these circumstances, based on Inquiry No. 2009, the Information and Communications Council studied the necessary technical requirements for transmission bandwidth to ensure the wider band use of 920 MHz low-power radio stations, while maintaining frequency sharing with existing systems. Today, MIC received a partial report from the Council.

2. Outline of the partial report

The published material is in Japanese only.

3. Future schedule

In consideration of the partial report, MIC will promptly make the institutional development of relevant regulations.
