March 22, 2022 Technical Requirements for 5-GHz-Band Weather Radar and 9.7-GHz-Band General-Purpose Weather Radar

On March 22, 2022, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received a partial report from the Information and Communications Council (chaired by UCHIYAMADA Takeshi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Toyota Motor Corporation) concerning technical requirements for 5-GHz-band weather radar and 9.7-GHz-band general-purpose weather radar as part of the technical requirements for weather radar (Inquiry No. 2040, dated September 27, 2017).

1. Background

From the perspective of providing weather information, weather radar is indispensable for ensuring safety and security in people’s daily lives. As disasters have recently become severer than before, there is a call for the introduction of more powerful weather radar and the installation of small weather radar by local governments.
In light of such needs, the Land Radiocommunication Subcommittee under the Department on Information and Communications Technology of the Information and Communications Council started a study in October 2017 concerning technical requirements for 5-GHz-band weather radar and 9.7-GHz-band general-purpose weather radar as part of the technical requirements for weather radar, and compiled a report in March 2022.
The Department on Information and Communications Technology of the Information and Communications Council deliberated on the study results compiled in the Subcommittee’s report, and today, MIC received a partial report from the Department.
