March 22, 2022 Technical Requirements Relating to the Introduction of 5.2 GHz Band In-Automobiles Wireless LAN

Partial report from Information and Communications Council

On March 22, 2022, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received a partial report from the Information and Communications Council (Chaired by UCHIYAMADA Takeshi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Toyota Motor Corporation) concerning technical requirements relating to the introduction of 5.2 GHz band in-vehicle wireless LAN under technical requirements for the advanced use of wireless LAN systems as part of technical requirements for upgrading low-power wireless communications systems (Inquiry No. 2009, dated September 30, 2002).

1. Background

Against the backdrop of the growing needs for the use of communication services to view videos in automobiles, the 2019 ITU World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-19) made a decision to make 5.2GHz band wireless LAN available in automobiles.
In light of such background, the Land Radiocommunication Subcommittee under the Department on Information and Communications Technology of the Information and Communications Council studied technical requirements relating to the introduction of 5.2 GHz band in-automobiles wireless LAN, and the Department on Information and Communications Technology deliberated on the study results compiled in the Subcommittee's report. Today, MIC received a partial report from the Council.
