April 1, 2022 Decision on Subsidized Entity for Beyond 5G R&D Promotion Project (General Type) under FY2021 Supplementary Budget

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has selected the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology as the subsidized entity (executive agency) for the Beyond 5G research and development (R&D) promotion project (general type).

1. Outline

In order to establish the elemental technologies necessary for the realization of Beyond 5G, the next-generation information and communication technology that is expected to become the foundation of all industries and societies in the 2030s, and to secure international competitiveness in a digital era, MIC will support the R&D activities of private companies, universities, etc. through an organization (executive agency) that has expert knowledge and experience.
MIC made a public solicitation from Friday, February 25 through Friday, March 18, 2022, for the executive agency which will carry out affairs concerning consignment of R&D and granting of subsidies to private companies, universities, etc. that conduct R&D related to Beyond 5G, with regard to the Beyond 5G R&D promotion project (general type) under the FY2021 supplementary budget.
As a result of examining the details of applications filed by applicants to the public solicitation, MIC selected the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) as the executive agency.

2. Future schedule

NICT will make public solicitations of private companies, universities, etc. that conduct R&D related to Beyond 5G as soon as it makes necessary preparations. When the public solicitations start, they will also be announced on MIC's website.
