April 19, 2022 Technical Requirements Relating to the Introduction of 6 GHz Band Wireless LAN

Partial report from the Information and Communications Council

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) received a partial report from the Information and Communications Council (chaired by UCHIYAMADA Takeshi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Toyota Motor Corporation) concerning technical requirements relating to the introduction of 6 GHz band wireless LAN under technical requirements for the advanced use of wireless LAN systems as part of the technical requirements for upgrading low-power wireless communications systems (Inquiry No. 2009, dated September 30, 2002).

1. Background

There is a call for enhancement of the convenience of wireless LAN systems along with the recent growth in the use of these systems for purposes such as work-from-home and online meetings and lessons. In order to provide higher-speed, more stable communications services, other countries promote the use of 6 GHz band frequencies.
In light of such background, the Land Radiocommunication Subcommittee under the Department on Information and Communications Technology of the Information and Communications Council studied technical requirements relating to the introduction of 6 GHz band wireless LAN, and the Department on Information and Communications Technology deliberated on the study results compiled in the Subcommittee’s report. Today, MIC received a partial report from the Council.

2. Future schedule

In consideration of the partial report, MIC will promptly make the institutional development of the Radio Act and relevant Ministerial Ordinances.
