June 15, 2022 Solicitation of Opinions on Draft Report of Study Group on Utilizing Post Office Data and Ideal Privacy Protection

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIT) organized the Study Group on Utilizing Post Office Data and Ideal Privacy Protection in October 2021. Since its establishment, the Study Group has discussed measures that are necessary to promote the effective use of data held by the Japan Post Group, while ensuring the confidentiality of correspondence and the appropriate handling of personal information.
This time, the Study Group compiled a draft report of its discussions, and MIC prepared a draft revision of the Explanation of the Guidelines for the Protection of Personal Information in the Postal Service Sector (Notice of the Personal Information Protection Commission and MIC No. 2 of 2022) based on discussions at the Study Group and, further based on this draft revision, also prepared a draft revision of the Explanation of the Guidelines for the Protection of Personal Information in the Correspondence Mail Sector (Notice of the Personal Information Protection Commission and MIC No. 3 of 2022).
Accordingly, MIC will solicit opinions on these drafts from Thursday, June 16 through Friday, July 15, 2022.

1. Subjects of solicitation of opinions

  • Report of Study Group on Utilizing Post Office Data and Ideal Privacy Protection (draft)
  • Draft revision of the Explanation of the Guidelines for the Protection of Personal Information in the Postal Service Sector (Notice of the Personal Information Protection Commission and MIC No. 2 of 2022)
  • Draft revision of the Explanation of the Guidelines for the Protection of Personal Information in the Correspondence Mail Sector (Notice of the Personal Information Protection Commission and MIC No. 3 of 2022)

2. Period for submission of opinions

From Thursday, June 16 through Friday, July 15, 2022

    Submission of opinions by postal mail must also arrive no later than the deadline.

3. Future schedule

MIC will promptly complete the report and revise the Explanations of the Guidelines for the Protection of Personal Information in the Postal Service and Correspondence Mail Sectors based on the submitted opinions.
