June 30, 2022 Interim Report by the Information and Communications Council concerning Information and Communications Technology Strategy Beyond 5G — With the aim of building a robust and vibrant society in the 2030s — (Inquiry No. 27 dated September 30, 2021)

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) today received an interim report from the Information and Communications Council (chaired by UCHIYAMADA Takeshi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Toyota Motor Corporation) concerning Information and Communications Technology Strategy Beyond 5G — With the aim of building a robust and vibrant society in the 2030s — (Inquiry No. 27 dated September 30, 2021).

1. Background, etc.

On September 30, 2021, MIC made an inquiry concerning Information and Communications Technology Strategy Beyond 5G — With the aim of building a robust and vibrant society in the 2030s — (Inquiry No. 27 dated September 30, 2021).
The Department on Information and Communications Technology (chaired by OIE Yuji, professor emeritus, Kyushu Institute of Technology) and the Subcommittee on Technology Strategy (chaired by AIDA Hitoshi, professor, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo) under the Information and Communications Council carried out investigations and deliberations on this matter, and an interim report was compiled at the Council's General Assembly held today.

2. Outline of the interim report

This interim report drastically updates the R&D strategy, etc. indicated in the Beyond 5G Promotion Strategy (MIC, June 2020) and recommends new technology strategies with regard to Beyond 5G (6G), which is information and communications infrastructure that forms the foundation of all kinds of industries and social activities in the future, under a recognition that reinforcement of international competitiveness and ensuring economic security are important.
Specifically, the interim report contains matters including a policy to robustly push forward the following strategies with regard to Beyond 5G (6G): an "R&D strategy" to identify the priority areas of R&D into which Japan should make intensive investments as a nation, and accelerate R&D as well as social implementation; a "social implementation strategy" to advance early and sequential implementation of development results on networks; an "intellectual property / international standardization strategy" combined with the R&D strategy; and an "overseas development strategy" to lead the global market.

3. Future schedule

MIC will take this interim report into consideration in promoting information and communications policies in the future.
