July 29, 2022 Decision on Executive Agency for Beyond 5G R&D Promotion Project (Effective Use of Radio Frequencies) under the FY2022 Initial Budget

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has selected the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology as the executive agency for the Beyond 5G research and development (R&D) promotion project (effective use of radio frequencies).

1. Overview

In order to establish the elemental technologies necessary for the realization of Beyond 5G, the next-generation information and communication infrastructure expected to become the foundation of all industries and societies in the 2030s, MIC implements the Beyond 5G R&D Promotion Project, whereby it entrusts R&D to private companies, universities, etc. through an organization (executive agency) that has expert knowledge and experience.
MIC made a public solicitation from Monday, June 13, through Monday, July 4, 2022, for the executive agency (subsidized entity) that will carry out affairs concerning entrustment of R&D to private companies, universities, etc. that conduct R&D related to Beyond 5G, with regard to the Beyond 5G R&D Promotion Project (effective use of radio frequencies) under the FY2022 initial budget.
As a result of examining the details of applications filed by applicants to the public solicitation, MIC selected the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) as the executive agency.

2. Future schedule

NICT will make public solicitations for entities that conduct R&D relating to the Beyond 5G R&D Promotion Project (effective use of radio frequencies) under the FY2022 initial budget as soon as it makes necessary preparations.
