September 8, 2022 Eleventh New Business Strategy Seminar for the Beyond 5G Era

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) will sponsor the eleventh New Business Strategy Seminar for the Beyond 5G Era. This seminar is an initiative of the Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center (co-headed by MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, and YANAGAWA Noriyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo).

1. Purpose

On December 18, 2020, MIC launched the Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center (co-headed by MORIKAWA Hiroyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, and YANAGAWA Noriyuki, Professor, Graduate School of Economics, the University of Tokyo). The purpose of the Beyond 5G New Business Strategy Center is to strategically acquire intellectual property and standardize with the participation of major industry-academia-government players toward the Beyond 5G era.
The center encourages private companies, universities, and other organizations to proactively and strategically promote the formation of markets and new market entry, the development and social implementation of innovative technologies and services by making full use of intellectual property and standardization. Therefore, MIC will support these efforts, provide reference information and a place for collaboration, and promote dissemination, and enlightenment.
As part of the efforts of the Center, the eleventh New Business Strategy Seminar for the Beyond 5G Era under the theme of “The Relationship of Business Strategy to Intellectual Property and Standardization” will be held for IP department managers, international standardization and R&D department managers, researchers, etc.

Seminar outline

This seminar will focus on SMEs and startups undertaking intellectual property and standardization activities as an integral part of their business strategy.
In the first of the three lectures, Professor IKEGAMI Jusuke of Waseda University will talk about current business strategy at large corporations and SMEs, and large corporations’ collaborations with SMEs and startups. Following this, an introduction to intellectual property and standardization initiatives at individual companies will be provided in lectures by Mr. NAKAMURA Katsushige, President of Mitaka Kohki Co., Ltd., which manufactured the high-definition television camera system fitted to the space shuttle Columbia and has captured a top share of the medical instruments market, and Mr. FURUKAWA Hiroshi, Representative Director and CEO of PicoCELA Inc., a university startup with experience of standardization activities in such areas as ARIB, ETSI, and 3GPP.
The panel discussion will examine approaches to intellectual property and standardization in the Beyond 5G era from the perspective of SMEs and startups when implementing corporate business strategies.
