September 30, 2022 Election Result of Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau of International Telecommunication Union (ITU)

During the 22nd Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-22) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) held in Bucharest, Romania, from September 26 through October 14, 2022, the election for the next Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau was held on the morning of September 30 (local time). Mr. ONOE Seizo, a Japanese candidate, currently serving as the CSSO of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, was elected as the next Director with a majority of votes cast.
Mr. ONOE Seizo will take up his position as the next Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau in January next year and is expected to be in charge of the standardization of the next-generation communication network that is expected to be the socioeconomic infrastructure in 2030s.

1. Outline

After about a year of campaigning since the announcement of his candidacy in September 2021, Mr. ONOE Seizo, CSSO (Chief Standardization Strategy Officer) of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, was elected as the next Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (a four-year term and can be extended up to a maximum of two terms).
Including Mr. ONOE, three candidates ran for this election. The other two were Mr. Thomas Zielke (from Germany), and Mr. Bilel Jamoussi (from Tunisia), currently working at the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau. In the end, Mr. ONOEI won the election with a majority of votes cast by the participating member states of ITU with votes.

2. Election of Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General

In addition to the election of the next Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, the election of the next Secretary-General and Deputy Secretary-General was held at the PP-22. As a result, Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin (from the U.S.) was elected to the next Secretary-General, and Mr. Tomas Lamanauskas (from Lithuania) was elected to the next Deputy Secretary-General of ITU. Close collaboration between Mr. ONOE, the next Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, is expected when their new term starts.
