January 18, 2023 Talks Between Mr. MATSUMOTO, Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, and H.E. FICK, U.S. Department of State Ambassador at Large for Cyberspace and Digital Policy

On Tuesday, January 17, 2023, Mr. MATSUMOTO Takeaki, Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications, held talks with H.E. Nathaniel FICK, U.S. Department of State Ambassador at Large for Cyberspace and Digital Policy. They exchanged opinions about important policy issues involving Japan and the U.S. in the digital field, and agreed to working closely within the G7 and other multilateral frameworks, as well as to promote specific cooperative efforts between the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) and the U.S. Department of State to achieve open and resilient telecommunications networks.

Outcome of the talks with Ambassador FICK

On Tuesday, January 17, 2023 (U.S. local time), Minister MATSUMOTO held talks with Ambassador FICK, during which they exchanged opinions about important policy issues involving Japan and the U.S. in the digital field. Both sides agreed that Japan and the U.S. would cooperate closely within the G7 and other multilateral frameworks with a view to the resilient telecommunications networks, human-centered AI, and free and open internet.
In regard to the resilient telecommunications networks, they agreed to making maximum use of both bilateral^* and multilateral frameworks in strengthening concrete efforts.
They also agreed that, in light of the importance of ensuring open, interoperable, and secure 5G and Beyond 5G (6G), they would seek to further strengthen multifaceted and concrete cooperative relationships in the promotion of open interface in third countries.
Moreover, they affirmed the importance of Japan-U.S. cooperation in support for capacity building in developing countries in the field of cybersecurity.
